Chris’s book, Bright Midnight, was featured in the Providence Journal’s “Thriller Roundup”:
Chris Formant has crafted one of the most original thrillers I’ve read in some time in Bright Midnight (Astor + Blue, $16.95, 296 pages), centering on the just-bizarre-enough premise that the roster of dead legendary rock stars were actually murdered.
That list includes Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, all of whom certainly had their own drug-fueled demons. But in Formant’s vision, Rolling Stone reporter Gantry Elliot finds himself pursuing undeniable connections between all the deaths. Those connections surface in a series of anonymous mailings he receives, featuring cryptic clues that suggest the Woodstock Era involved far more than just peace and love.
In that sense, Bright Midnight reminded me of Joe Hill’s brilliant Heart Shaped Box or, even, George R.R. Martin’s vastly underrated The Armageddon Rag. I don’t know if rock-and-roll mysteries are worthy of their own sub-genre, but if so, Formant is the king, hitting all the right riffs and chords.
